According to Autocar India, Tata Motors have started working on a new variant of the Nexon EV. It will be a long-range version, so it will come with a battery capacity of 40 kWh whereas the current Nexon EV has a battery size of 30.2 kWh. Moreover, Tata Motors will be selling the 40 kWh variant alongside the 30.2 kWh variant.

The homegrown manufacturer is not discontinuing the 30.2 kWh variant because then the starting price of the Nexon EV will increase. The new variant will be priced higher than the current Nexon EV. Moreover, the current Nexon EV has enough range for doing city duties and daily commutes. So, if a person needs a car only for this purpose then he can opt for the 30.2 kWh battery variant.

Reduced boot space

The new variant will have a 30 percent larger battery pack, this means some space will be robbed away from the boot space and the floor. This is because, in the current Nexon EV, the batteries are placed in these positions. Because of this, the boot space could be reduced. The current Nexon EV has a decent boot space of 350-litres. Tata Motors might have to put the spare wheel in the boot just like they did with the Tigor EV.

More weight

Batteries also are quite heavy. The petrol-powered Nexon weighs around 1.2 tonnes whereas the diesel-powered Nexon weighs around 1.3 tonnes. On the other hand, Nexon EV weighs 1.4 tonnes. Tata Motors will be adding more batteries to increase the range. This means that the weight will increase even further. We are expecting the 40 kWh variant to weigh just under 1.5 tonnes.

More range

The biggest benefit of the new battery will be a more driving range. The current Nexon EV delivers around 180 to 200 km of driving range with an official figure of 312 km. The 40 kWh version will have an official figure of 400 km and a real-world range should be around 300 to 320 km.

More equipment

Tata Motors will be adding some equipment to the long-range Nexon EV. It will come with Electronic Stability Control and you would be able to adjust the intensity of regeneration. This will help in improving the driving range of the vehicle. Other things that we can expect are some cosmetic upgrades and a new set of alloy wheels. The rest of the vehicle will stay the same.

Increase in price

With all these upgrades, obviously, the price will get impacted. The current prices of Nexon EV start at Rs. 14.24 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 16.85 lakhs ex-showroom. We are expecting the 40 kWh variant to start from around Rs. 17 lakhs to around Rs. 18 lakhs.

Even after this, the Nexon EV is able to undercut other electric vehicles by a significant margin. The MG ZS EV starts at Rs. 20.99 lakhs ex-showroom whereas the Hyundai Kona Electric starts at Rs. 23.79 lakhs ex-showroom. Tata Motors’s Nexon EV offers the best balance of driving range and price because of which it has been the best selling electric vehicle in the Indian market since it was first launched.
